How to Identify the Correct Fluorescent Tube Replacement
Share
Replacing a fluorescent tube can be confusing, especially when the original markings have faded or the fitting is several years old. This guide explains how to identify the correct replacement fluorescent tube using a few simple checks.
1. Check the Tube Length
The length of the tube is one of the most important details.
Common T8 fluorescent tube lengths include:
- 450mm (2ft)
- 600mm (2ft)
- 900mm (3ft)
Measure the tube end to end, including the metal pins.
2. Identify the Wattage
The wattage is usually printed on the tube, for example:
- 15W
- 18W
- 30W
If the wattage is not visible, it can often be inferred from the length of the tube.
3. Check the Cap Type
Most fluorescent tubes use a G13 cap, which has two pins at each end.
If your tube has a different connector, check carefully before ordering.
4. Understand the Colour Code
Many tubes include a two- or three-digit code, such as:
840 – Cool White (4000K)
835 – Neutral White (3500K)
830 – Warm White (3000K)
The first digit refers to colour rendering, and the last two digits indicate colour temperature.
5. When Markings Are Missing
If the text on the tube has worn away:
- Measure the length
- Check the fitting type
- Look at the colour of the light currently produced
- Take a photo of the tube and fitting
If unsure, it’s often better to replace the tube with a like-for-like match.
Final Tip
If your fluorescent tube flickers or struggles to start, the starter may also need replacing at the same time.
